Overview
In 1692 Steinhaus Castle passed into the possession of the Eiselsberg family when Imperial Count Johann Weikhart Katzianer von Katzenstein sold it to his son-in-law Jakob Friedrich von Eyselsberg. The castle remained connected with the family for more than three centuries. In 1725 the extensive estate was placed in an entail (Fideikommiss). After the fire of 1736 the castle was rebuilt by 1766. In the 19th century Steinhaus was the family seat of the Barons von Eiselsberg; the later surgeon Anton Freiherr von Eiselsberg was born here in 1860. The last Eiselsberg owner was Ambassador Otto Eiselsberg (1917–2001), who left the castle and its land to his nephew Christoph Minutillo in 2001. After a long inheritance dispute, the estate finally passed to Christoph's daughter Anna Minutillo-Jereb.
Connection to the Family Archive
The Chronik von Steinhaus über die Kriegszeit 1939–1945 (chronicle of Steinhaus during the war years) by Agnes Eiselsberg and the Steinhauser Journal 1942–1956 by Agnes Eiselsberg, Adi Ehrlenspiel and Ditti Jordis are valuable documents of their time.
A large family reunion took place in 1985 in the presence of President Kirchschläger – among others, 23 direct Eiselsberg cousins attended.
The archive in Steinhaus holds documents of Anton Eiselsberg and objects such as his bowed zither and the emergency case he designed for the railway, as well as an album about the X-ray laboratory from 1930.
